Update 9/13/05:
WHITEBOARD 01
There's a new feature on my website, currently only accessible via posts. I will call it "Darxim's Whiteboard", or "Whiteboard" for short. Insead of a regular post, it will be an image, usually accompanied by a post. I got the idea from the otherwise pointless but large whiteboard in my cubicle at work. Since it was so big and blank, I started drawing on it. First, I wrote "I need an erasor." Then I drew Godzilla. Then I drew some destroyed buildings behind Godzilla. Then I drew a little perfect kindergarten-style house, quite undestroyed, between the destroyed buildings. Then I drew a face that I keep modifying. Then Twyla drew me on it. Gary wrote his cell phone number on it, but that's not very interesting. For a short while, I had prefixed his name with "Ace +", but then I thought people might get the wrong impression if I had the Ambiguously Gay Duo's phone number on my whiteboard, so I erased that part.
Today's whiteboard image is a satellite hybrid Google map that I have drawn on. The part I have drawn represents the path I rode my bike along on yesterday (September 12). The blue line represents the paved portion, the orange line represents the somewhat-accurate unpaved dirt trail, and the short green line represents where there was no trail, just a lot of tall grass and a small stream that was a bitch to get my bike across, but fortunately had no snakes to speak of. The bike ride lasted about 70-80 minutes. Before I embarked on the journey, I said to myself "I'm not going to overdo it today. I want to make sure my legs work tomorrow. I'm going to ride out to that one point, turn around, come back, and be done in about 40 minutes. I'm not going to push myself." At first, I stuck by this plan. Some uphill slopes I walked my bike up. However, I was making such good time, I decided to go a tad further. Then I found myself at Lake Fairfax park. I decided, "I'll just have a short look around." Then I ended up on the other side of the lake. I figured, "Bah, I'll just circle back on the road, it can't be that far." That road went directly North. The path should tell the rest of the story.
At any rate, here it is: Whiteboard 01.
Please note that the start/end position is marked with the red X, and a large red arrow pointing at the X. These can be found in the bottom-left corner of the map.
Be warned! It is very large for an image file (7 MB).
Update 9/7/05:
UNIXs
I've often thought that "UNIX" was an ill-fated choice of names for a good Operating System. Whoever came up with it probably didn't think about it too much. Now, you may not immediately understand why I say this. Well, imagine a party, and at the party there are two computer geeks talking about UNIX. Then, someone who knows very little about computers, and hasn't ever heard of UNIX, approaches them. For stereotype's sake (and to make it easier to write), we'll say it's a woman.
"Excuse me, but what are you talking about?" she asks.
"Oh, we were just comparing our UNIX boxes," one of the geeks replies. "Mine's got a lot more space, but his memory's better. You know how it is with UNIX."
"Oh, I'm sorry," she says. "I didn't realize you guys were Eunuchs."
Memory indeed.
