Update 8/9/06:ALL YOU GET FOR OTAKONOtakon was this past weekend. I was there, for whatever that's worth.
Otakon is the worst possible convention (of those I go to) to not have a cell phone at. I don't have a cell phone. Usually I just run into people. It generally works out, although I must admit that the desire to have a cell phone in time for Otakon has been there for over a year now. I just still haven't gotten one. Well, I must have just been getting lucky at prior Otakons, because this year during the convention I rarely saw anyone I knew. There were even people looking for me that I never saw once.
Friday was the best day once I was actually at Otakon. Prior to that, the day sucked. I had to work, but they let me out early. It took 3½ hours to get to my hotel, another half hour to check in (they messed up my reservation), then another 20 minutes or so into the convention center (cab ride + walking around to where the registration entrance actually was). Did I mention I had to park on the street? The garage at the hotel was full for some reason, so I had to park on the street. At least I didn't have to pay for parking. Now, once actually at Otakon, I saw Jared in line, and before I got up to the registration booth, I saw George. Jared disappeared, so I just hung out with George for a while until we met up with John and his friend Mark. Then it was the four of us for the rest of the night.
Saturday was the most depressing day. I must've seen a dozen of my friends all at once in the dealer's room early on, but they all went their own ways and I never saw them again. Also, I got to the dealer's room table just 10 minutes too late. Jesse informed me upon my arrival that just 10 minutes before, some cute girl was looking for me. Well, damn. To top off my mostly-lonely day, I decided to walk a couple of blocks before catching a cab so I wouldn't get reamed on the price again. I should've walked a couple blocks toward the porn district, but instead walked a couple blocks toward my hotel. After that, the only cabs that passed by already had fares and didn't stop. I ended up walking the entire 3½ miles back to my hotel. On top of that, my right foot was already bothering me before beginning this trek. I should've just accepted my losses and paid the extra money. I would've felt a lot better on Sunday, at least.
Sunday I spent the entire time in the dealer's room in case anyone came by the Anime USA table looking for me. The only person who did (at least while I was there) was Barbara, but at least she was one of the people I wanted to see, and I got to see her in her Jubilee costume. She looked good in it.
And that was my Otakon. I've learned that I really need to get a cell phone, and so I'm going to get one. I just need to figure out which one. Something very thin...
